Golf Tournament 2012

Filed under: Latest News — Agape Corner @ 7:08 pm

Changed

This May marks the 16th year of the Agape Corner Golf Tournament. Thanks to the efforts of Albert Long and other dedicated partners this event has been a special blessing to our school and our children.

Among those who join Albert each year is Woody Durham, the former voice of the Tar Heels, “I look forward each year, whenever possible to playing in the Agape Corner Golf event, and what a pleasure it is for me to support an organization like Agape, which does so much for kids.” Bucky Waters, who supports many organizations in Durham also takes time to participate in the tournament. “Outside of my work with the V Foundation For Cancer Research, I thoroughly enjoy doing all I can to support the Rescue Mission, Agape Corner, and the First Baptist Church all here in Durham.”

Thanks to Albert Long’s dedication to our ministry the golf tournament has raised funds which have contributed to the general operation of the school, the purchase of a 15 passenger van, construction of our new school building as well as that of our vocational building, which is equipped with every tool imaginable.

This year the proceeds from the tournament will be going to shore up the foundation at our dormitory and making repairs at staff housing. “What a real joy it has been for me to be a small part of the ministry of Agape Corner, and to have had the pleasure of heading up our golf event for the kids these past sixteen years. I would not trade this experience for all the gold in the world.”

Congratulations

God has blessed Agape abundantly this past year in so many ways, but his blessing has been especially evident in the lives of two of our families.

First we would like to welcome Corban Smith the new addition to the family of our own Jared and Noelle Smith. It’s been wonderful to be a part of the excitement and anticipation of the arrival of Jared and Noelle’s first child. We look forward to watching him grow and become a part of our Agape family.

Thanks to the Summit Church and God’s guidance, two of our precious children, one 8 years old and one 10 months old were given new homes and families that truly love them as their own.

Our prayer is that in the coming years when they are asked about their past families they will respond as one of our second graders does to the same question, “No, my mommy had me out of her heart not her stomach.” We praise God.

New Principal

It’s hard to believe that almost a year has gone by since my return to Agape Corner as Principal. My days have been filled with renewing old friendships, getting to know the students and building relationships with the wonderful staff that I am privileged to work with. It took many twists and turns to find my way back to Agape and I am looking forward to experiencing all that God has in store.

My first weeks back were spent doing spring cleaning. The staff and I de-cluttered the school and gave it a good scrubbing to prepare it for the new school year. We filled and refilled our trash receptacles by literally tossing the trash through the windows, which turned hard work into a little bit of play. In the intervening months we have streamlined our curriculum and our schedule to allow more down time for staff during the work day for class preparation and planning. The teachers Jan and Bob Snow,  Jared Smith, Marcia McCoy, Clint Jones and Mark Bryant have been an absolute joy to work with. Their sense of humor and positive attitudes make all things seem possible. I especially want to thank our founder Louise Roudebush for the confidence she displays in me on a daily basis. She has wholeheartedly put the daily running of the school in my hands and her support means the world to me.

The summer session is fast approaching and that is always a very special time. The highlight of this summer session will be a trip to our nation’s capital. In order to make this trip and others possible we hope that you will join us in our various fund raising efforts leading up to that time. You can help us out by donating items for our upcoming yard sales and by collecting Box Tops for Education coupons from your cereal boxes and other supermarket purchases.

We thank you for your support these many years and look forward to your continued partnership in raising God’s children.
